Abstract

In this study, the efficiency of an educational program for health care workers about prevention methods from blood borne infectious agents (hepatitis B virus, human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus) and attitudes regarding prevention of infections were evaluated. An educational program was prepared for 40 laboratory technicians among the total of 256 in the hospital. A questionnaire was applied for testing the knowledge about blood borne infections after the program. After one year the same questionnaire and a new one for testing the attitude were applied to the same group (n=30) and a control group (n=36) which didn't participated in the previous educational program. The mean number of correct answers in the posttest which was applied at the end of the educational program (17.53+ 1.72) was greater than the mean number of correct answers (15.92+ 2.17) in the test applied after a year. The mean number of correct answers were significantly higher in the group that attended to the educational program compared with the control group (13.63+2.75). A statistically significant difference was noted about the washing hands attitude in the group that attended to the educational program compared with the control group. In conclusion, continuous education is necessary for health care workers to increase and maintain the knowledge of preventive strategies for blood borne infectious agents and to develop appropriate attitude.
