Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of the single umbilical artery (SUA), as well as the maternal and prenatal outcomes of patients with SUA. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, patients with SUA who underwent an ultrasound examination between 13-24 weeks of gestation were included in the study population. During the evaluation, the pregnancy outcomes of 38 patients with SUA and 76 randomly selected patients without SUA were compared. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. MedCalc Statistical Software programme version 19.2.1 was used for the statistical analysis. Results: The incidence of SUA in single and twin pregnancies were 1.2 % and 2.3 %, respectively. When evaluated in terms of concomitant congenital anomaly, 26.3% of the patients with SUA were found to have various congenital malformations such as pyelectasis, omphalocele, lateral ventriculomegaly, cleft lip and/or palate, musculoskeletal system abnormalities and cardiac abnormalities. Compared with controls, patients with SUA had decreased gestational age at deliver (p = 0.0336) and had decreased birht weight of fetuses (p = 0.0431). Moreover, the rate of cesarean section (p = 0.0002), spontaneous abortion (p = 0.0445), preterm delivery (p = 0.0099) and IUGR (p = 0.0104) were statistically significantly higher in patients with SUA than those incontrol group. In addition, the presence of congenital anomalies accompanying SUA was found to be associated with increased spontaneous abortion and increased cesarean rate. Conclusion: Patients with SUA should be considered as a high risk pregnancy group not only in terms of chromosomal disease and congenital abnomalitiy, but also in terms of poor obstetric outcome and they should be followed closely during pregnancy.
