Abstract

In this study, we evaluated children with neurofibromatosis type 1 and presented two cases who developed malignant soft tissue sarcomas and six patients with optic glioma. Neurofibromatosis-1 gene is a tumor suppressor gene and mutations within this gene may lead to development of malignant tumors. The risk of childhood cancer in young patients with neurofibromatosis 1 is 0.27 to 1%. In this study, a total of 27 children with neurofibromatosis type-1 was evaluated and one patient presented with rhabdomyosarcoma and another one developed fibrosarcoma. These two patients received multimodal anticancer therapy but died with malignant disease at 58th and 12th months of follow-up respectively. Six out of 27 patients (22.2%) had optic glioma. All optic gliomas have been followed up conservatively except for one symptomatic case who received radiotherapy. All patients with neurofibromatosis type-1 should be followed by a multidisciplinary team for the potential complications, especially for the risk of developing malignant tumors.
