Abstract

Prevalence of genitourinary tract infections caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis are related to sociodemographic status. Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of these microorganisms vary regionally. In our study, it is aimed to determine frequency of U.urealyticum and M.hominis in genitourinary tract samples collected from patients with suspicion of genitourinary tract infection and, their antimicrobial susceptibility ratios. Genitourinary tract samples consisting of urine, vaginal discharge, cervical swab, semen and urethral discharge obtained from 3410 patients suspected with genitourinary infection caused by U.urealyticum and/or M.hominis were evaluated retrospectively. Mycoplasma IES commercial kit (AutobioDiagnostics, China) was used for identification and, antimicrobial susceptibility testing of U.urealyticum and/or M.hominis. Susceptibility test results were categorized as susceptible, intermediate or resistant according to CLSI criteria. While U.urealyticum, and M.hominis was detected from 22.2 % and 0.2 % of the samples respectively; co-infection was detected in 2.9 %. The most effective antimicrobials against both U.urealyticum and M.hominis were minocycline (98.5 % and 94.3 %), doxycycline (98.1 % and 96.2 %) and josamycin (98.1 % and 88.7 %). Our results indicate that U.urealyticum was clearly more frequent than M.hominis, positive culture results were more common in 20-29 years and females (p=0.034), and minocycline and doxycycline susceptibility ratios were considerably high against both microorganisms.
