Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the musculoskeletal complications of the Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and effects of the DM in the range of motion (ROM), grip and pinch strength, dexterity and manuel hand muscle testing. Materials and Methods: 40 women patients with DM and 15 healthy women were included. The musculoskeletal problems of hand and shoulder were evaluated. The ROM of wrists, 4th and 5th fingers of metacarphophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints were measured. Hand grip strength and lateral pinch strength were measured. Dexterity was evaluated with Purdue Pegboard test and Semmes Weinstein monifilament testing (SWM) was performed for assessment of perception of touch/pressure. Manual muscle tests evaluating 6 hand movement for intrinsic hand muscles were performed. Results: Twenty seven (67,5%) of 40 DM patients had limited joint mobility (LJM), 4(10%) of patients had trigger finger, 28(70%) of patients had Dupuytren's contracture (DC) and 7(17,5%) of patients had adhesive capsulitis. Grip and pinch strength (p=00008, p=0.0003 respectively), SWM test (p=0.034), dexterity (p=0.0009) and manuel muscle testing evaluations were significantly impaired in DM group than control group. The frequency of DC was significantly higher in patients with long term DM (>15 years) than patients with short term DM (p=0.021). The dexterity (p=0.013) and lateral pinch strength (p=0.029) of patients with muscle impairment were significantly lower than patients without muscle impairment. Conclusion: DM may cause musculoskeletal system complications which may lead to the loss of mobility in hand joints and skin and impairment of hand functions.
