Abstract

Objective: Although hyponatremia is one of the most common electrolyte abnormalities in children with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), the number of relevant research is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum sodium levels and other laboratory parameters, as well as radiological findings and clinical outcomes in children with LRTI. Material and Methods: Between 01.01.2009 and 31.12.2009, a total of 240 hospitalized children aged 1 month-14 years with LRTI were evaluated retrospectively in the Izmir Tepecik Teaching and Research Hospital, Department of Pediatrics. Results: The mean serum sodium level was 137.1±2.8 mmol/L (median:137; minimum: 128; maximum: 148 mmol/L) and 39 cases (16.2%) had hyponatremia. Higher erythrocyte sedimentation rates (p=0.012) absolute neutrophil count (p=0.025), and lower serum sodium (p
