Abstract

Nosocomial urinary tract infections are the most frequent nosocomial infections. E.coli is the most frequently isolated agent. Regional antibiotic resistance rates must be screened because of the management of empirical treatment of urinary E.coli infections. This study was conducted at Abant Izzet Baysal University Duzce Medical School, Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology Department. Totally, 151 urinary samples from hospitalized patients had a growth of>$10^5$ cfu/ml E. coli. Identification of bacteria were performed by classical identification methods and API 20E (bioMerieux). The standardized Kirby-Bauer disk susceptibility test was used as recommended by NCCLS M2-A6. Resistance rates of the isolates were as follows:for ampicillin 77 %,for amoxicillin-clavulanic acid44 %,for cefaclor 34 %,for cefuroxime 18 %,for ceftriaxone 10 %,for ceftazidime 6 %,for imipenem 2 %,for amikacin 3 %,for gentamicin 16 %,for ciprofloxacin 17 %,for trimethoprimsulphamethoxazole 43%. In conclusion, E.coli strains isolated from nosocomial urinary tract infections had high resistance rates against ciprofloxacin and gentamicin, the most frequently used antibiotic in these cases. Amikacin and imipenem were found as the most effective antibiotics.
