Abstract

Objectives: In this study, it was aimed to investigate theinfluence of antipsychotic drug use (typical/atypical orboth, together with long acting or depot form and ECTor not) on re-hospitalizations in schizophrenic patients.Method: For this purpose, 292 schizophrenic patientswho had been hospitalized in Erenköy Training andResearch Hospital for Psychiatric and NeurologicalDiseases between April 1th 2011 and September 30th2011 and discharged thereafter were included in thestudy. Drugs of the patients on discharge were recorded.Whether the patients were re-hospitalized within 6months after discharge was learned through interviewswith the patients or their relatives. These data were verified using medical records. Duration of re-hospitalization was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Results: No difference was found between the patientswho were re-hospitalized or not in terms of using typical, atypical or both groups of antipsychotics (p=0.175),using long acting or depot form antipsychotics(p=0.624) and applying ECT on the last hospitalization(p=0.239). Duration until re-hospitalization was not different between patients who used typical, atypical orboth groups of antipsychotics together (p=0.413), longacting or depot form antipsychotics (p=0.084) and whowere applied ECT or not on the last re-hospitalization(p=0.708). Conclusion: Our results indicated that treatment selection alone is not effective for prevention of rehospitalization
