Abstract

Fosfomycin and methicillin susceptibilities were investigated by disk diffusion method and slime production was investigated by Congo red agar plate in 50 coagulase negative staphylococci isolated from hospital acquired infections. There is no criteria for susceptibility of staphylococci to fosfomycin neither in NCCLS nor in other standards. Fosfomycin zone diameters were established in our study as a median 32 mm (range: 18-64 mm), and according to the criteria used in some other papers, it is concluded that there is no fosfomycin-resistance in our strains. Ten strains were found susceptible to methicillin and 40 resistant; 23 strains were found slime negative and 27 positive. No significant relationship was found between the fosfomycin inhibition zones and methicillin resistance or slime production, between methicillin resistance and slime production, between methicillin resistance or slime production and the strains with inhibition zones under or over the median zone for fosfomycin. More comprehensive studies are needed to make use of fosfomycin in the treatment of infections due to staphylococci.
