Abstract

Today, developing technology, new treatment methods and quality health services enable individuals to live a longer and healthier life. In this context, individuals allocate more budget for their health. While these increasing expenditures indicate healthy and long-lived individuals, they also represent more potential tourist candidates in terms of tourism activities. The main purpose of the study is to examine the causality relationship between health expenditures and thenumber of tourists. To analyze this relationship, the variables of number of tourists and per capita health expenditures were used. The sample of the study consists of G7 countries. In examining the relationship between the health expenditures of these countries and the variables of the number of tourists they send, panel causality test was performed by using the data for the period 1995-2017. According to the findings obtained; In this study, which deals with the causality relationship between the number of tourists and health expenditures in G7 countries, health expenditures are not the cause of the number of tourists; It shows that the number of tourists is not the cause of health spending. When the individual panel findings are evaluated, it is seen that health expenditures are the reason for the number of tourists only in Germany and Italy. As expected theoretically, the number of tourists is not the cause of health spending. The findings obtained cannot be mentioned that health expenditures have increased, but they have a sufficient effect on tourism movements of individuals. In other words, it can be inferred that more therapeutic services increase in the health expenditure composition. These findings are important for policy makers as they show that health sector development has positive effects on international tourism in the long term.
