Abstract

The reduction of disease through immunization is one of the greatest medical successes of the 20th century. Smallpox has been globally eradicated, and devastating diseases such as poliomyelitis, measles and diphtheria are now exceedingly rare in many countries. Currently, the overwhelming morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable disease occurs not only in children, but also in adults. Providing immunizations for adults can prevent serious diseases. Each year, an estimated 30,000-50,000 adults die from vaccine-preventable diseases. Most of the mortality in adults is attributable to two diseases: influenza and pneumococcal disease. In the current article, adult immunization is explained.
