Abstract

Osteoporosis is a disease occurring as a result of the reduction in protein network and loss in mineral density due to a disorder in bone metabolism, characterized by easy fracture of bones. Both osteoporosis and periodontal diseases are chronic, multifacto-rial and result in bone loss and the damage is aggravated with the presence of local and systemic factors. Whilst some studies show that osteoporosis has positive impact on the development of periodontitis, some disprove this theory. The purpose of this review article is to make a detailed overview of the relationship between osteoporosis and periodontal disease.
