Abstract

Objectives: The aims of this study were to evaluate the reasons for referral to Consultation liaison psychiatry (CLP) and outcomes of CLP in rheumatologic or rehabilitation patients for whom psychiatric consultation was needed. Materials and Methods: This study included 86 patients who were admitted to the inpatient physical therapy and rehabilitation clinic. They were first interviewed by a psychologist and then evaluated with CLP because of the need for psychiatric consultation. Results: Eight-six patients (42 F [48.8%], 44 M [51.2%]; mean age: 51.89±17.66 years) were included in the study. The most frequent reasons for CLP were sleep problems in 47.7% (n=41), non-compliance with treatment in 17.4% (n=15), and anxiety complaints in 15.1% (n=13). The most common psychiatric diagnoses were depressive (29.1%), anxiety (27.9%) and sleep (10.5%) disorders. Antidepressants (31.4%) and anxiolytics (23.3%) were the most frequently prescribed drugs. Only 16 patients were receiving no-drug therapy. Conclusion: Various psychiatric disorders, most commonly depression and anxiety, are frequently diagnosed in patients with physical illnesses. Clinical applications with CLP are important since CLP is based on the evaluation of patients on a biopsychosocial basis in a more comprehensive manner, with the goal to increase quality of life.
