Abstract

Association of blood melatonin and ferritin levels in children with Thalassemia major Context: The effects of iron load especially in patients receiving regular transfusion on pineal gland and its major neurohormone melatonin is not known. Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the possible alterations on melatonin rhythm in regularly transfused children with thalassemia major. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with thalassemia major were enrolled in this study. Results: There was no significant difference for daytime melatonin levels between control group and thalassemia major patients. However, nighttime melatonin levels were significantly lower in thalassemia major patients than control group. Conclusion: As a conclusion, Iron overload may have detrimental effects that leads to disruption in melatonin rhythm.

Özet

Amaç: düzenli kan transfüzyonu yapılan hastalarda demir birikiminin pineal bez ve melatonin üzerine etkileri bilinmemektedir. Talasemi majorlu çocuklarda melatonin düzeylerinin saptanması amaçlanmıştır. Metot: Talasemi major tanılı 20 çocuk hasta ve yaşı, cinsiyeti benzer 20 sağlıklı çocuk olmak üzere iki grup incelenmiştir. Bulgular: Gündüz melatonin düzeyleri açısından iki grup arasında fark yok iken gece melatonin düzeyleri hasta grubunda kontrol grubuna göre belirgin azalmış bulundu. Sonuç: Aşırı demir birikimi pineal bezi etkileyerek melatonin salınım ritmini bozabilir.
