Abstract

Today, almost everyone, especially adolescents, uses the smartphone to reach the internet. Although the use of computers is widespread, the demand for smartphones has increased because it is not always possible to carry the computer. Despite the convenience and affordability, overuse of smartphones causes some issues and this is expressed as smartphone addiction. The aim of this study is to determine whether there is a significant difference between secondary school students' smartphone addition and gender, class level, age, perceived academic achievement, socioeconomic level, parents’ education status, academic achievement, and time of using internet on smartphones. The sample of the study is 566 secondary school students studying in Silopi Selahattin Eyyubi Secondary School in the 2018-2019 academic year. In these 566 students, 313 participants were randomly selected (girls: 55.3% & boys: 44.7%). In this study, Smart Phone Addiction Scale-Short Version and personal information form were used to collect data. The data were analyzed with SPSS statistical package program. According to the findings, it was determined that secondary school students' smartphone addition was significantly different in terms of class level, mother education status and the duration of using the internet by smartphone. However, there was no significant difference between secondary school students' smartphone addition and gender, age, perceived academic achievement, socioeconomic status, father education level and academic achievement. The findings were discussed with the related literature and suggestions were offered for researchers, teachers and school counselors.
