Abstract

Esophageal perforation is a surgical emergencyassociated with high morbidity and mortality. Themost common cause of esophageal perforation isinstrumentation. Transesophageal echocardiography isa very reliable method increasingly used incardiology, cardiac surgery and intensive care becauseit is an accurate and semi-invasive technique. A rarebut dreadful complication of this procedure isperforation of the esophagus. Although surgicalmanagement is the preferred therapy for mostepisodes of esophageal perforation, some patients arenot candidates for extensive surgical procedures.Endoscopic therapy is advantageous in these criticallyill patients. Endoscopic clips can be used for thispurpose. Minimally invasive techniques in thetreatment of esophageal injury in the near future willbe used more frequently
