Abstract

Burkholderia cepacia can cause nosocomial outbreaks due to a single contaminated source such as disinfectant, nebulizer solutions and medical devices in hospital environment. This article presents an outbreak of nosocomial B.cepacia infection following urinary endoscopic intervention in immunocompromised patients. A urinary infection outbreak occurred between June and August 2009 in urological department. B.cepacia strains with the same antibiograms were isolated from 8 patients to whom double-J (DJ) catheters inserted. B.cepacia was also isolated from washing fluid of the inner surface of the cystoscope’s lumen. So cystoscopy instrument was thought to be the source of infection. Operating room staff were educated by infectious control commitee on washing and sterilization of instruments. After proper cleaning and instruments sterilization, no B.cepacia was isolated. Outbreaks of B.cepacia infections should be considered to occur in case of contaminated instruments were used in hospital. Surveillance directed to the target should be done in case of outbreaks and infection control measures should be implemented more stringently to avoid recurrence of such infections.
