Abstract

This article examines the narrative and formal ways in which sound and silence construct space in four selected short stories by Sevinç Çokum. The study employs qualitative textual analysis and close reading, taking the sound-source-space-listener relation as its basic unit of analysis. Soundscape theory provides the primary framework for auditory analysis, while approaches to memory and lived space are used as complementary perspectives. Close readings of “Bir Eski Sokak Sesi,” “Yalnızlık,” “Tarifsiz Bir Sesin Hikâyesi,” and “Gece Kuşu Uzun Öter” show that sound and silence produce spatial meaning through enumeration, repetition, ellipsis, rhythm, auditory focalization, and acoustic contrasts. In “Bir Eski Sokak Sesi,” the enumeration of past sounds constructs the street’s auditory memory; in “Yalnızlık,” morning sounds enable temporary contact with the environment and the past. In “Tarifsiz Bir Sesin Hikâyesi,” an unidentified sound expands the narrator’s field of attention, while in “Gece Kuşu Uzun Öter,” nocturnal acoustics become part of the temporary interval in which creative writing becomes possible. The article uses “acoustic amnesia” not as a psychological mechanism of forgetting but as a context-specific analytical term for the selective interruption of auditory continuity when locally distinctive and socially recognized sounds recede or become masked during urban transformation. The findings suggest that acoustic space in these stories is produced not merely by a repertoire of sounds but by their formal organization within narrative.
