Abstract

Data assessing on quality of life (QOL) after commonly performed bariatric surgery is ambiguous.. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of two different surgeries on postoperative QOL, weight loss and surgical technique. 60 individuals that has been operated on laparoscopic One-Line Anastomotic Gastric Bypass (n=30) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (n=30) were included. Body weight loss, excess body weight loss, body mass index, measurement of sexual functions with quality of life index (using FSFI, EDF and GIQLI questionnaires) were collected prospectively; preoperatively, 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. In the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy group, mean preoperative body weight(kg) 117.3 (93-144) kg, BMI (kg/m2) was 43.3 (35.8-56) kg/m2 and excess body weight loss (kg) at 6 months 31.9 (25.8-33.8) kg postoperatively while in the laparoscopic one-line anastomotic gastric bypass group mean preoperative body weight was 133.2(102-193) kg, BMI was 49 (40.6-66.9) kg/m2, and excess body weight loss was 36.5 (27.8-51.9). Body weight loss seem to be higher in the second group (LOAGB). GIQLI scores had improved in both groups during the 1st, 3rd and 6th month. Laparoscopic one-line anastomotic gastric bypass was found to be more effective than laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in total scores at first and third months. FSFI-EDF scores improved in both groups, but laparoscopic one-line anastomotic gastric bypass was found to be more effective on this matter. Both surgeries are effective in controlling body weight and QOL and sexual functions in the early period in morbidly obese patients. In the LOAGB group body weight loss was seen significantly higher.
