Abstract

Although water is an essential resource for sustaining life, it is increasingly under pressure due to human activities such as population growth, urbanization, and industrialization. This study aims to develop an applicable model for sustainable water management in university campuses. Factors such as climate change, deforestation, and irresponsible water consumption contribute to increased surface runoff and a decline in groundwater levels. The annual net runoff in the study area is 1474.82 mm, with the highest value recorded in January (221.35 mm) and the lowest in July (6.41 mm). In January alone, surface runoff reached 640.55 m³ across the campus, indicating that impervious surfaces pose a higher flood risk during winter. Monthly variation follows a polynomial trend with a correlation of R² = 0.8556. Traditional drainage systems fall short in replenishing groundwater and often result in significant water loss. In this context, green infrastructure solutions—such as permeable surfaces, rain gardens, vegetated swales, and rooftop rainwater harvesting—offer sustainable alternatives. Calculations conducted at RTEU Fener Campus indicate that approximately 4,270 m³ of rainwater can be recovered annually for use in irrigation and cleaning. The findings suggest that surface runoff can be reduced, groundwater resources can be supported, and integrated water management can be improved at the campus scale. This approach may serve as a model for other urban areas and university campuses.
