Abstract

Objective: This study examined the associations of fear of missing out (FoMO), social media addiction, and romantic relationship quality dimensions with self-hate among adults involved in romantic relationships. Method: The sample consisted of 300 adults aged 18-65 years who resided in Turkey and were currently involved in a romantic relationship. Participants completed measures of FoMO, social media addiction, perceived partner support, relationship conflict, relationship depth, and self-hate. Results: FoMO, social media addiction, and relationship conflict were positively associated with self-hate, whereas perceived partner support was negatively associated with self-hate. Relationship depth was not significantly associated with self-hate at the bivariate level. In the final regression model, FoMO and relationship conflict showed significant positive unique associations with self-hate, whereas perceived partner support showed a significant negative unique association. Social media addiction did not explain significant additional variance beyond FoMO. Relationship depth showed a positive conditional coefficient, which was interpreted cautiously because of its substantial overlap with perceived partner support. The final model explained 10.5% of the variance in self-hate. Conclusion: Self-hate was associated with both digital and relational factors, highlighting the importance of considering these domains together when examining negative self-evaluation..
