Abstract

The transparency and quality of an independent audit are among the most basic indicators of financial reporting reliability. However, the literature offers few objective decision-making tools that enable decision-makers in enterprises to identify the most suitable audit firms. The mandatory transparency reports that independent auditors of public-interest entities (PIEs) must publish provide a rich, quantitative, and publicly available source of information on firm structure, capacity, and effort. When multidimensional and conflicting criteria are considered, selecting the most appropriate independent auditor therefore becomes a multi-criteria decision-making problem that goes beyond simple firm-level comparisons. This study proposes and implements a decision-making model that integrates the Modified Preference Selection Index (MPSI) and the Simple Ranking Process (SRP) to address this problem. MPSI derives criterion weights directly from the data distribution, eliminating subjective judgments by decision-makers. The recently developed SRP ranks the alternatives within each criterion, does not require normalization, and translates the performance of the alternatives into an overall ranking; because its results depend strongly on the criterion weights, robust objective weighting is essential. To the authors' knowledge, the MPSI–SRP combination has not previously been proposed in the literature. The framework is demonstrated on an illustrative dataset of 12 anonymized audit firms evaluated on nine capacity indicators that mirror the structure of mandatory transparency reports. The dataset is not a verified extraction from any firm's published report, so the results should be read as a proof of concept rather than a market assessment. The resulting ranking is consistent with the expected scale-based structure of the audit market. Robustness and validity are examined through a 5,000-iteration Monte Carlo simulation, Markov chain consensus analysis, weight-sensitivity analysis, comparison with four established methods, a rank-reversal test, comparison with alternative weighting schemes, and fit statistics (Cronbach's α = 0.939; Kendall's W = 0.996; Fleiss' κ = 0.855); these indicate that the procedure is robust and reliable on the illustrative data.
