Abstract

Presentation of mania and hypomania may differ between children and adults because of the developmental differences. For that reason, there is a considerable disagreement about the most appropriate diagnosis for children with chronic and severe irritability, hyperactivity and abnormal mood (usually sadness and/or anger). Researchers in this field suggested a phenotype system to solve the diagnostic controversial problems. These researchers defined “narrow” and “broad” phenotypes for juvenile mania aiming children meeting the criteria for each phenotype could be assesed systemically and followed longitudinally. The broad phenotype is exhibited by patients who have a chronic, non episodic illness which does not include the hallmark symptoms of mania but shares the narrower phenotypes of the symptoms of severe irritability and hyperarousal. In this article we aimed to discuss the follow-up period and the development history of a case who meets the criteria of broad phenotype. The presence of episodes and symptoms can be used in differentiating the clinical phenotypes of juvenile mania. The utility and validity of this system can be tested in subsequent researchs.
