Abstract

Objective: Varicella zoster is often a self-limiting infectious disease in previously healthy children, though; it rarely can cause serious complications and even mortality. VaricellaZoster Virus (VZV) vaccination has been applied at the age of 12 months according to national vaccination schedule since 2013. The aim of this study was to evaluate the complications and hospitalization rates of varicella infection after national vaccination program.Material and Methods: Patient files of 88 previously healthy children who attended with VZV infection after vaccination program were retrospectively analyzed. Data regarding the course of the disease, treatment strategies and prognosis were recorded. Diagnosis was performed according to history, the characteristic type of rash and clinical course of the disease. Secondary bacterial infections and other conditions requiring hospitalization within 14 days after initial diagnosis were accepted as complications. Results: Eighty eight patients (59.1% male) with median age of 62 months (range 1-205 months) were enrolled. When distribution of patients according to years is considered; there were 15 (17%) cases in 2013, 18 (20.5%) cases in 2014 and 55 (62.5%) cases in 2015. Seven patients (7.9%) had vaccination history. Total complication rate related to varicella infection was 23.9% with the most common one being secondary bacterial infections (19.3%). Six patients (3 patients with primary varicella infection, 1 patients with postinfectious ataxia, 1 patients with encephalitis, 1 patient with bone-joint infection) were hospitalized. Nine patients (10.2%) were given acyclovir treatment. Conclusion: Multicenter studies evaluating regarding varicella complications after national vaccination program should be conducted in our country

Olguların 3'ü primer suçiçeği, 1'i postenfeksiyöz ataksi, 1'i ensefalit ve 1'i ise kemik-eklem enfeksiyonu olmak üzere 6'sı yatırıldı. Hastaların 5'i yatan olmak üzere toplam 9'una (%10,2) asiklovir tedavisi verildi. Sonuç: Ülkemizde tek doz uygulanan suçiçeği aşılama sonrası dönemde, komplikasyon ve hastaneye yatış oranlarını yansıtacak çok merkezli çalışmalara ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır
