Abstract

In this article, effects of cobalt addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-25Si-5Fe-XCo(X = 0, 1, 3 and 5) alloys were investigated. Al-25Si-5Fe-XCo(X = 0, 1, 3 and 5) master alloys, Al (99.99% pure), Si (99.999% pure), Fe (99.999% purity) and Co (99.999% purity) elements have been successfully synthesized in the induction melting furnace. All production processes were performed in Ar atmosphere. The microstructures of samples were investigated by using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A Vickers microhardness tester was used for microhardness measurements. The results showed that sufficient amount of Co addition alters morphology of Fe-bearing intermetallic compounds (IMCs) from long rod/needle-like to short rod-like, and provides a more homogenous distribution of them in the microstructure. In the Al-Si alloys, Cobalt can also refine primary Si particles and change their morphology because it causes higher constitutional under cooling and has large mixing enthalpy with Si. Addition of 5 wt.%Co leads to a decrease in both average size of the primary silicon and Fe-bearing intermetallic phases in as-cast Al-Si alloys. Microhardness values of alloys generally shows an increase with the obtained addition of Co.
