Abstract

This article analyzes Hilmi Yavuz's Wound Poems (Yara Şiirleri, 2012) within the framework of postmodern Gothic aesthetics. Wound Poems systematically juxtaposes the sublime images of Divan and Sufi poetry ‒love, the rose, melancholy, divine speech‒ with bodily decay, pus, gangrene, leprosy, and plague, thereby constructing a distinctive Gothic poetics. The study proposes a multi-layered reading model that simultaneously mobilizes Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection, Jacques Derrida's deconstruction and hauntology, Sigmund Freud's uncanny, Jean-François Lyotard's thesis on the collapse of grand narratives, Jean Baudrillard's simulacra, and Judith Halberstam's postmodern Gothic. Methodologically, close reading, intertextual tracking, and a multi-theoretical framework are combined. Through detailed analyses of the poems in the collection, the article conceptualizes the "Gothic body poem," demonstrating how the body is transformed into wound, text, and specter at both individual and collective levels. The study argues that Yavuz inverts and abjectifies the sublime imagery of the Divan tradition and thereby occupies a unique position in Turkish literature as the poet who systematizes postmodern Gothic aesthetics into a coherent poetic program. It offers a theoretical framework aimed at filling a significant gap in local literary history and provides a new conceptual ground for comparative research on Turkish poetry and postmodern aesthetics.
