Abstract

This study investigates the structural effects of irregular denting arrangements in the reed—formed by intentionally left empty dents—on fabric width, warp crimp, and weft crimp, in interaction with different weave types and weft densities. In hybrid woven fabrics constructed using five weave structures and three weft densities, the proportion of empty dents in the reed was systematically varied and yarn crimp behavior was quantitatively analyzed. The results indicate that weft density is a strong determinant of both warp and weft crimp, while reed emptiness significantly increases fabric width. Weave type emerged as a dominant factor particularly for warp crimp: leno-based structures exhibited higher crimp values, whereas plain and straight-draft structures produced lower crimp levels. Overall, the findings demonstrate that irregular reed denting, in combination with weave structure and yarn density, substantially alters fabric geometry. Thus, reed design is identified as a strategic parameter for controlling fabric width and crimp behavior in woven production. In this respect, the study provides a novel contribution to the limited literature on irregular reed denting.
