Abstract

This study aims to examine the historical development of communication and public relations practices from a perspective extending from ancient times to the digital age. It is argued that communication forms established through cave paintings, inscriptions, speeches, and monumental structures in the early periods of humanity fulfilled functions such as shaping public perception, persuasion, and relationship management long before the modern concept of public relations emerged. Through examples drawn from the Sumerian, Hittite, Ancient Greek, and Roman civilizations, the historical roots of public relations and their connections with social, political, and economic structures are explored. In the second part of the study, the impact of transformations in communication technologies on public relations practices is discussed, with a particular focus on the process of digitalization and the changes brought about by artificial intelligence technologies in the field of public relations. The opportunities offered by artificial intelligence in areas such as data analysis, media monitoring, content production, target audience identification, and influencer collaborations contribute to making public relations practices more strategic, faster, and data-driven. In this context, it is emphasized that artificial intelligence enables public relations professionals to reduce their operational workload and focus more on strategic decision-making processes. Conducted using a qualitative approach, this study employs a descriptive analysis method based on a review of the literature. The findings reveal that public relations is not merely a product of the modern era; rather, it is a dynamic communication practice that has evolved throughout history in line with changing communication tools and technologies while maintaining its continuity. Ultimately, the study highlights both the historical continuity of the public relations discipline and the transformative role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies within this field.
