Abstract

Aim: This study aims to examine the relationship between middle school students’ exposure to bullying and their perceptions of social support. Methods: The study, designed using the correlational survey model of quantitative research methods, includes middle school students studying in Bingöl province as its population and 421 middle school students selected by simple random sampling as its sample. The Child-Adolescent Bullying Scale was used to determine middle school students’ exposure to bullying, and the Social Relations Scale was used to determine their perceptions of social support, and demographic information form. Descriptive statistics, comparison tests, correlation, and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: The results of the study revealed that middle school students’ exposure to bullying did not differ according to gender and grade level, but differed significantly according to socioeconomic status. Accordingly, students from low socioeconomic families were more likely to be exposed to bullying. Conclusion: Our results indicate a negative relationship between exposure to bullying and family and peer support. However, it was determined that both family and peer support significantly predict middle school students’ exposure to bullying in a negative direction.
