Abstract

This paper focuses on reducing the negative impacts of traditional plastics in the production of meltblown filters by using poly lactic acid (PLA) as an environmental friendly biodegradable polymer. In this study the impacts of collector drum speed, die to collector distance (DCD) and die hole diameter on the basis weight, thickness, air permeability, solidity, fiber diameter, water contact angle, and air filtration characteristics of microfibrous PLA nonwovens prepared by meltblowing were investigated. Statistical analyses was conducted by using SPSS software. PLA meltblowns prepared in this study had an average fiber diameter of 2.17 to 3.11 micrometers. The results have shown that, by tailoring the properties of PLA meltblown, filtration performance can be improved while also reducing the environmental impact. This research provides important insights into the production of sustainable meltblown nonwovens by integrating a biodegradable polymer and focusing on the effect of production parameters on material properties.
