Abstract
Purpose: The aim of current study is to detect the effect of emphatic skill education program offered to nursing department freshman students on the development of their emphatic tendency as well as emphatic skills. Patients and Methods: The study has been conducted on a semi-experimental one-group pre-test/post-test pattern. In order to detrmine socio-demographic features of students, “A Survey of Demographic Features” was utilized to evaluate emphatic tendency and skills of students Emphatic Tendency ETS and Emphatic Skill ESS-B scales as developed by Dökmen 1994 . In data evaluation number and percentage distributions and ESS-B and ETS average emphatic scores have been compared via paired samples t test. Results: It was detected that after education, the average empathy scores of students were further statistically meaningful compared to their scores before education p=0.000 . As regards the average score of emphatic tendency, however, no statistically meaningful difference was determined before and after education. Conclusion: Emphatic skill development program has manifested that nursing department freshman students’ emphatic skills have increased remarkably whereas no changes have been observed in their emphatic tendencies.

Amaç: Empati, kişilerarası ilişkilerin geliştirilmesinde önemli bir unsurdur. Çalışma, hemşirelik birinci sınıf öğrencilerine verilen empatik beceri eğitim programının öğrencilerin empatik eğilim ve empatik becerilerinin gelişmesine etkisini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Hastalar ve Yöntem: Çalışma yarı deneysel tek grupta öntest-sontest düzeninde yapılmıştır. Araştırmada öğrencilerin sosyo-demografik özelliklerini belirlemek amacıyla Demografik Özellikleri İçeren Anket, Empatik eğilim ve becerilerini değerlendirmek için Dökmen 1994 tarafından geliştirilen Empatik Eğilim EEÖ ve Empatik Beceri EBÖ-B ölçekleri kullanılmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde sayı ve yüzde dağılımları ve EBÖ-B ve EEÖ ortalama empatik puanları ise paired samples t testi ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Bulgular: Öğrencilerin eğitim sonrası empati puan ortalamasının eğitim sonrasında eğitim öncesine göre istatistiksel olarak ileri düzeyde anlamlı olduğu saptanmıştır p=0.000 . Empatik eğilim ortalaması ise eğitim öncesi ve sonrası aralarındaki fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmamıştır. Sonuç: Empatik beceri geliştirme programı ile hemşirelik birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin empatik becerilerinin önemli oranda arttığı, ancak empatik eğilimlerinde değişiklik olmadığı görülmüştür.
