Abstract

This study problematizes the conceptual boundaries of the postphenomenological approach, which positions technology as an integral mediation of human experience. Employing philosophical argument analysis and dialectical synthesis, the study presents an original re-evaluation of Don Ihde’s intellectual framework. Accordingly, Ihde's foundational concepts are brought into a dialectical engagement with the ontological objections of Donna Haraway, the ethical critiques of Peter-Paul Verbeek, and the sociopolitical interventions of Andrew Feenberg. The analyses reveal that Ihde’s asymmetrical stance—denying equal standing to humans and technological objects—implicitly reproduces the subject-object dichotomy he sought to overcome. On the ethical plane, however, Verbeek's intervention positions technologies as moral mediators, leading to a normative expansion that extends ethical agency beyond human consciousness. In the sociopolitical context, drawing on Feenberg's critique of the passive body, the approach is structurally inadequate for macro-level institutional analyses. Ultimately, despite offering a robust analytical language, postphenomenology harbors a philosophical impasse in its effort to preserve the human-machine hierarchy, an expansion in the boundaries of moral agency on the ethical plane, and macro-level inadequacies in sociopolitical analyses.
