Abstract

The Bombay Consulate General, which was the hand of the Ottoman Empire in India, had an important place in the development of Ottoman commercial relations with the Indian region and in the protection of the rights of Ottoman merchants and subjects who were active in the region. The consuls were appointed to their positions by being given salaries and allowances. The first job of the appointed consul was to find a building where the consulship activities would be carried out. The rent of this building was covered by the consul’s allocation. Official transactions of merchants and Ottoman citizens were carried out in the consulship, and revenue was obtained from them. While a certain part of this revenue was spent on mandatory expenses, the remaining part was sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This study presents the evaluation of the accounting records of the Bombay Consulate General between the Rumi years of 1292-1299 (1876-1883), identified in the Ottoman Archives. According to this evaluation, the quarterly or annual revenues of the Bombay Consulate General, its expenses and what these expenses include, the amount of revenue to be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the amounts of money requested from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are shown.
