Abstract

With the establishment of the Republic, the founding cadre sought to delineate the distinctions between the Republic of Türkiye and the Ottoman Empire and to eliminate elements that could potentially hinder the construction of a nation-state. In this context, the founders of the Republic placed a series of reforms—designed to penetrate all spheres of social life—at the very centre of the nation-state building process. One of the domains most profoundly affected by this transformation was the urban sphere. Urban identity is shaped by both structural and social components embedded within cities. Accordingly, during this period, cities that were intended to acquire a new identity became primary objects of transformation, not only in terms of their built environment but also with respect to their social fabric. One of the constitutive elements of urban identity is neighbourhood names. Neighbourhood names embody social, historical, and cultural messages and function, in a sense, as instruments of collective memory transmission. This study aims to identify the differences in the transformation of neighbourhood names between the cities of İzmir and Konya, which can be considered as representing two contrasting poles of change in the Republic of Türkiye. Conducted through a comprehensive, systematic, and comparative analysis of the existing academic literature, this study examines the social and urban transformations of the Republican period and reveals the historical and cultural motivations underlying the changes in neighbourhood names during this era. In this regard, it is observed that İzmir experienced a process characterized by “forward-looking national modernization,” whereas Konya pursued an approach aimed at “nationalizing and preserving the past.” By clarifying the efforts of the Republic of Türkiye to distance itself from the identity legacy of the Ottoman State within the urban context during the nation-state building process, this study is expected to contribute to the relevant literature.

Özet

Cumhuriyet’in kuruluşuyla beraber, kurucu irade tarafından, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu arasındaki farkların belirginleştirilmesi ve ulus devlet oluşumunu sekteye uğratacak unsurların önüne geçilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu doğrultuda, Cumhuriyet’in kurucuları, toplumsal sahanın her noktasına temas edecek birtakım reform faaliyetlerini, ulus devlet inşa sürecinin merkezine almışlardır.
