Abstract

Advances in digital technologies have led to the proliferation of data-driven communication practices. Consequently, privacy management has evolved from being a field limited to individual preferences into a multi-layered research area involving different disciplines. The issue of control over personal data has opened up privacy management to debate at both the individual and organisational levels. The structure of privacy management, which shapes individual and organisational relationships, has led to the expansion of the literature, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation of the field. This study aims to reveal how privacy management is addressed in the literature, the themes around which it is concentrated, and the areas where research gaps exist. The study, which aims to present an overview of the literature, is exploratory and designed using a scoping review method. The research findings reveal that privacy management studies are predominantly addressed in the context of digital communication, with research focusing on individual user behaviour being prominent, and privacy management often being treated as a secondary concept. Furthermore, studies with high theoretical depth are limited and methodological diversity is relatively low. This study highlights the need for more comprehensive research in the field of privacy management, with greater theoretical and methodological diversity.
