Abstract

Approximately one-third of the food produced worldwide is wasted, indicating that food waste is a significant economic problem. The limited research examining the relationship between food waste and education, and the empirical gap in the context of economic literacy, enhance the unique value and importance of this study. The research investigates whether economic literacy changes attitudes towards food waste. To this end, the relationship between economic literacy and food waste was examined. A survey was conducted among students at Kastamonu University. The scale developed by Kaya and Dilek (2024) was used to measure food waste. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were then performed for the items constituting food waste. The economic literacy test developed by Dilek et al. (2018a) was used to measure economic literacy, updated to reflect changing conditions. As a result, no correlation was found between economic literacy test scores and the sub-dimensions of food waste, and no significant regression models could be established. The results show that economic literacy may not be sufficient to prevent food waste under certain conditions. This research is limited to students at Kastamonu University. Further research on other samples will contribute to the literature.
