Abstract
This article aims to examine how Anatolian high school students conceptualize the notions of religion and sect (madhhab). The study was conducted with high school students enrolled in two different districts of Istanbul. The "Anatolian High School Students' Perception of Religious Interpretation (Madhhab) Survey" was employed as the data collection instrument. The article analyzes the responses given to the question designed to assess the conceptualization of religion and sect within this survey. In this item, students were presented with five different options. These respectively represent (1) the approach that identifies religion with sect (madhhab), (2) the approach that regards the sect as a human institution formed within religion, (3) the approach that entirely separates religion from sect, (4) the normative approach that considers changing one's sect a sin, and (5) the approach that deems the sect unnecessary. In this respect, the item functions not merely as an indicator of students’ level of knowledge, but also as a strong conceptual measure of their perceptions of religious authority, tradition, interpretation, belonging, and legitimacy. In the survey form, the expression “form of religious interpretation” directly refers to madhhabs/sects. The study seeks to identify the perceptions of religion and madhhab among students enrolled in six Anatolian high schools in the Gaziosmanpaşa and Fatih districts of Istanbul. In addition, the other items in the survey deepen the interpretation of the question concerning religion–madhhab conceptualization by revealing students’ attitudes toward madhhab affiliation, sources of religious knowledge, tolerance, and expectations regarding religious education. A total of 765 students aged between 14 and 18 participated in the survey, with more than one hundred students from different grade levels of Anatolian high schools taking part. The literature indicates that adolescence is a critical stage in which identity formation, the search for belonging, and the capacity for abstract thinking become particularly pronounced. During this period, religious orientations may provide young people with a protective world of meaning however, when constructed problematically, they may also produce exclusionary boundaries. Treating madhhab as a “tradition of interpretation” and a “method of interpretation” makes it possible to question essentialist readings that identify madhhab with religion itself. Indeed, according to researchers, a madhhab is not religion itself rather, it is a human form of religious understanding and interpretive tradition that emerges in the process of understanding, interpreting, and living religion, and that is shaped within historical and social conditions. Similarly, contemporary studies emphasize that sectarianism and conflict do not arise solely from theological differences, but are largely nourished by historical, political, and social processes of construction. Within this framework, the study reveals the conceptual schemas through which young people understand the religion–madhhab relationship. It also draws attention to the need for teaching madhhabs in secondary education through historical, pluralistic, and comparative approaches. UNESCO likewise emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in education, the recognition of differences, the teaching of the historical and internal diversity of religions, and the systematic development of mutual respect within school environments. Accordingly, this study is expected to contribute to clarifying the boundaries between religion and madhhab, reducing exclusionary and essentialist language, and developing a perspective on religious education that strengthens the ethics of coexistence among young people.
