Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the mathematical reasoning self-efficacy and beliefs about readiness to teach mathematics of prospective primary school mathematics teachers, and to examine how these variables differ in terms of various factors. The research was conducted with 202 prospective primary school mathematics teachers studying at a public university in the Aegean Region of Turkey. The relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was employed in the study. As data collection tools, the “Mathematical Reasoning Self-Efficacy Scale” developed by Yavuz Mumcu (2019) and the “Beliefs About Readiness to Teach Mathematics Scale” adapted into Turkish by Aydın & Çelik (2016) were used. The results showed that there were no significant differences in either scale according to gender. It was concluded that there is a statistically significant, moderately positive correlation between prospective teachers’ mathematical reasoning self-efficacy and their beliefs about readiness to teach mathematics (r = .527, p = .0 < .05). To make the findings of this study more generalizable, it is recommended that further research be conducted with a larger and more heterogeneous sample group from different universities.
