Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the contributions of MUN conferences to the development of foreign language skills. The research was conducted at MUN conferences held in seven different educational institutions. 140 delegates participated in the study. Of these participants, 105 were from schools in Turkey, and the other 35 students were studying in Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Finland, Bulgaria, Portugal, and Spain. Interviews were conducted with a total of fifteen teachers from schools in Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Finland, Bulgaria, Portugal, and Spain who were part of the study's organizing team. This research used a single-group post-test quasi-experimental design without a control group, one of the experimental models. Data were obtained from a semi-structured interview form prepared for teachers and students, and from a self-efficacy scale for assessing English language skills administered to students. In addition, the social media accounts of schools organizing MUN conferences, as well as teacher and student opinions, were examined through content analysis. Comments, shares, and the impact of MUN conferences were evaluated. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in data analysis. The results revealed that the effect of MUN conferences on the development of foreign language skills did not show a significant difference in terms of gender, age, school type, and foreign language level. Based on teacher and student opinions, it was determined that participation in MUN conferences improved speaking and writing skills, as well as listening and reading skills.

Çalışmanın düzenleyici ekibinde yer alan Türkiye, Romanya, Macaristan, Hırvatistan, Finlandiya, Bulgaristan, Portekiz ve İspanya okullarından toplamda on beş öğretmenle görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir.
