Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationships between residents’ forms of contact with tourism, their tourism-related employment and economic income status, and their perceptions of tourism’s regional economic contribution in Milas, a cultural heritage destination, within the context of sustainable tourism development. The study is based on the premise that sustainable tourism development should be considered not only in terms of destination attractions and expectations of economic growth, but also in relation to residents’ perceptions of tourism, forms of contact with tourists, and level of social acceptance. Adopting a quantitative research approach, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to residents aged 18 and above living in Milas. A total of 407 valid questionnaires were analyzed using frequency and percentage distributions, Chi-square independence tests, and Cramer’s V coefficients. The findings indicate that although residents’ direct economic engagement with tourism is limited, they generally have a positive perception of tourism’s contribution to regional development and employment opportunities. The relationship analyses further reveal that residents’ perceptions of tourism’s regional economic contribution are significantly associated with gaining economic income from tourism, having an employment connection with the tourism sector, contact with tourists, the nature of such contact, and approval of family members working in tourism facilities. The study concludes that sustainable tourism policies in cultural heritage destinations should be developed in a way that strengthens residents’ perceived economic benefits, increases their channels of contact with tourism, and supports their more visible participation in the tourism value chain.
Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, kültürel miras destinasyonu niteliği taşıyan Milas’ta yerel halkın turizmle temas biçimleri, turizmle ilişkili istihdam ve ekonomik kazanç durumları ile turizmin bölgesel ekonomik katkısına yönelik algıları arasındaki ilişkileri sürdürülebilir turizm gelişimi bağlamında incelemektir. Araştırma, sürdürülebilir turizm gelişiminin yalnızca destinasyonun sahip olduğu çekicilikler ve ekonomik büyüme beklentileriyle değil, yerel halkın turizme yönelik algıları, temas biçimleri ve toplumsal kabul düzeyiyle birlikte ele alınması gerektiği düşüncesinden hareket etmektedir. Nicel araştırma yaklaşımı doğrultusunda yürütülen çalışmanın verileri, Milas’ta ikamet eden 18 yaş ve üzerindeki yerel halka uygulanan yapılandırılmış soru formu aracılığıyla elde edilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamında 407 geçerli soru formundan oluşan veri seti, frekans ve yüzde dağılımları, Ki-kare bağımsızlık testi ve Cramer’s V katsayısı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular, Milas’ta yerel halkın turizmle doğrudan ekonomik ilişkisinin sınırlı olmasına rağmen, turizmin bölgesel kalkınmaya ve istihdam olanaklarına katkısına yönelik genel olarak olumlu bir algının bulunduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca turizmin bölgesel ekonomik katkısına ilişkin algının; turizmden ekonomik kazanç sağlama, turizmle ilişkili istihdam bağı kurma, turistlerle temas etme, temasın niteliği ve aile bireylerinin turizm tesislerinde çalışmasına yönelik kabul düzeyiyle anlamlı biçimde ilişkili olduğu belirlenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, kültürel miras destinasyonlarında sürdürülebilir turizm politikalarının yerel halkın ekonomik fayda algısını güçlendirecek, turizmle temas kanallarını artıracak ve yerel halkın turizm değer zincirine daha görünür biçimde katılımını destekleyecek şekilde geliştirilmesi gerektiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
