Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the extent and the ways in which the language skills, text types, and assessment approach defined in the 2018 Turkish Language and Literature Curriculum are represented in the Higher Education Examinations administered between 2018 and 2025. The study was conducted using a qualitative design based on document analysis; the curriculum, relevant assessment regulations, and Turkish and Turkish Language and Literature test items in the examinations were analyzed. Data were evaluated through descriptive statistics in terms of text type distribution, language skills, and cognitive processes measured. Findings indicate that assessment in both sessions of the examination is conducted through multiple-choice items, although the competencies measured differ across sessions. The Turkish subtest of the Basic Proficiency Test primarily measures reading comprehension skills, whereas subject-matter knowledge questions predominate in the Turkish Language and Literature subtest of the Field Proficiency Test. In addition, only items containing stimulus texts were classified by text type and analyzed as a subset. Results reveal a structural divergence between the curriculum’s skill-based approach emphasizing four language skills and literary diversity and the assessment structure of centralized examinations. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the curriculum–assessment–examination relationship.
