Abstract

Aim: Alongside the progress of modern medicine in Turkey, doulas and birth coaches have emerged as a relatively new phenomenon; however, the demand for them is growing daily. There has been no previous research on the knowledge and opinions of maternity nurses and midwives about doulas and birth coaches in Turkey. This study aims to explore the insights and perspectives of nurses and midwives working in maternity clinics and delivery rooms regarding doulas and birth coaches. Material and Method: This study is a descriptive and cross-sectional qualitative research design, conducted using a questionnaire prepared by the author in line with the literature. The data were collected face-to-face from a total of 142 midwives and nurses working in delivery rooms and maternity clinics in two different hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey. The relationship between variables was assessed using the chi-square significance test. Results: It was determined that nurses' and midwives' views on the benefits of a doula/birth coach and their views on the necessity of a doula/birth coach were positive. A significant difference was found in whether the participants thought a doula/birth coach was necessary (p <0.05). Additionally, participants who worked less in gynecology clinics and delivery rooms were significantly more supportive of the doula's duties and powers (p <0.05). Conclusion: Nursing and midwifery are specialized professions in different fields of healthcare. The knowledge and opinions of individuals in these two distinct professional groups support the presence of doulas and birth coaches in the healthcare sector. It is believed that the inadequacy of health policies, legal regulations, and institutional support is the underlying cause of the insufficient implementation of nursing and midwifery professions in Turkey.
