Abstract

This study aims at reviewing the theories which contibutes urban and space sociology with a critical analysis. Firstly, it elaborates the theories of Marx, Engels, Weber and Simmel who evaluate urbanization within the context of their social theories and broader social factors. Chicago school regards the inequality, anomy and social unrest in a city as natural and irreversible processes because of its Darwinist view which is based on competition, power and domination. In the 1970s, contemporaiy urban sociology, namely Neo-Marxist theory started to focus on the capitalist production process when dealing with city and space. Neo-Marxist scholars like Lefebvre, Castells and Harvey criticisize the view of Chicago School which see the inequality, contradictions and anomy created by urban developments as ci natural process. Besides, the Neo-Marxist scholars produce a veiy specific sociology of space which claims that city needs to be held with regard to capitalist relations and the logic of accumulation and capital. Finally, this study critically figures out the World City theoiy which held urbanization process within the context of globalization and reconstruction of world economy by market forces and technological developments. Key Words: Urban theories, chicago school, urbanization, city and inequality, neo-marxist theoiy, world city.
