Abstract

This study introduces a new tunable gradient metasurface design for beam steering. To achieve beam steering, four optimized meta-atoms with 900 phase difference are employed. With a total 3600 phase coverage, this metasurface can steer the reflected wave by controlling the incident wave. This metasurface is also tunable due to the use of VO2 material in its meta-atoms. When VO2 is in a metallic state, the gradient metasurface can steer the incident wave through polarization conversion. However, when VO2 is in the insulating state, the incident wave is reflected at the same angle with the same polarization. Thus, the proposed gradient metasurface can tunably manipulate the wavefront and polarization of the incident wave through reflection in the terahertz frequency range.
