Abstract
This study investigates the causal link between the VIX index, a widely followed indicator of global risk sentiment, and the BIST 50 index within an asymmetric and time-varying framework. The empirical analysis is based on monthly data covering the period from 2000:02 to 2026:05. The BIST 50 index is used to represent highly liquid firms in the Turkish equity market, whereas the VIX index is treated as a proxy for global uncertainty and shifts in investor risk perception. Methodologically, the BIST 50 series is transformed into logarithmic returns, while the VIX series is analyzed using logarithmic differences. The stationarity properties of the variables are first tested through the ADF unit root test, and the Hacker and Hatemi-J asymmetric causality test is subsequently employed. The static causality results suggest that there is no statistically significant causal relationship between the BIST 50 and VIX over the full sample period when positive and negative shocks are considered. Nevertheless, the time-varying causality results indicate that the relationship is not constant over time but becomes more pronounced in certain periods. Specifically, causality from the VIX to the BIST 50 is observed during the 2003–2005 period, after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, throughout the 2010–2014 period, and in the post-COVID-19 period marked by elevated uncertainty. Conversely, causality from the BIST 50 to the VIX appears to be limited and temporary. These findings suggest that the BIST 50 index responds to changes in global risk sentiment, while the feedback effect from the Turkish equity market to the global volatility indicator remains weak and short-lived.
