Abstract

This study investigates the potential of black cumin (Nigella sativa) seed pulp as a low-cost and natural biosorbent for the removal of malachite green (MG), a toxic cationic dye commonly found in industrial wastewater, from aqueous solutions. Given the adverse effects of water pollution on aquatic ecosystems, developing economical and environmentally friendly alternatives for wastewater treatment is critical. The study was conducted in a batch system using various initial dye concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 ppm) and temperatures (25 °C, 30 °C, 35 °C, and 40 °C) at a constant pH (5.60) and a stirring speed of 110 rpm. The effects of contact time and initial concentration on adsorption efficiency were analyzed. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were applied to determine the compatibility of the data with theoretical models. The Freundlich isotherm model provided higher correlation coefficients (R² = 0.7696 - 0.9475) at all temperatures compared to the Langmuir model. This suggests that the adsorption process occurs on heterogeneous surfaces and may involve multilayer adsorption. In contrast, the lower correlation values for the Langmuir model (R² = 0.4742 - 0.6989) indicate that the process cannot be fully explained by the assumption of ideal monolayer adsorption on homogeneous surfaces. Consequently, Nigella sativa seed pulp is identified as a highly promising, sustainable, and cost-effective biosorbent for MG removal. This study contributes to circular economy practices by promoting the integration of agricultural by-products into water treatment technologies.
