Abstract

Objectives: This study was carried out on the purpose of determining nursing students’ level of burnout and affecting factors elements. Methods: Sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional research consisted of 522 students in Nursing Department. The data were collected using the Student Information Form and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Scale (MBI-SS). Results: Scale sub-factor point averages of students were found as follows: Exhaustion: 15.85 ± 4.62, cynicism: 10.53 ± 3.75, efficacy: 11.45 ± 3.00, respectively. It was determined in the study that exhaustion and cynicism sub-factor points differed significantly according to the variables, having failed course, having chosen the department involuntarily, dissatisfaction with the department and perceiving oneself as unsuccessful. Also, it was determined in the study that efficacy sub-dimension points differed significantly according to the variables, having chosen the department involuntarily and perceiving oneself as successful. Conclusion: In this study, it was established that nursing students’ level of burnout varies depending on variables of sex, having failed course, having chosen the profession voluntarily, satisfaction with the nursing department and self-perception of success. In direction of these results, the increment of the activities for the adoption of professional identity in the education process and the inclusion, of activities that will increase the sense of success of the students; the clarification of the factors causing burnout with qualitative studies and the constitution of additional regulations in the curriculum; and the constitution of intervention studies to reduce burnout may be suggested..
