Abstract

Background and Aims: Celiac disease develops due to the effect of the gliadin fraction of wheat gluten, barley and rye proteins. Gluten- sensitive enteropathy is an autoimmune and familial illness that deve- lops after malabsorption, which is due to dietary intake of some grain products. It can occur at any age (1–80 years of age). The prevalences have been reported as 0,05-0,2% in the general population in Europe, and 0,5-1% in the world. In this study, the incidence of gluten disease in an adult population in the Erzurum area was investigated with en - doscopy. Materials and Methods: Between February-June 2010, the gastroscopy reports were examined retrospectively, and the endosco- pic incidence of celiac disease and demographic characteristics of pa - tients were investigated. Results: Gastroscopy was performed in a to - tal of 1950 patients (924 [47%] males, mean age: 48,27±17,09 years [range: 14-100]). Celiac disease was detected in 7 patients (0,35%) by endoscopy (5 females (70%), 2 males (30%); mean age: 29,85±11,92 years, range: 17-49). Conclusions: In the Erzurum region, prevalence of celiac disease has been identified as 1 in about 280 patients, and these patients are often young and female.
