Abstract

Climate change, which has become the most critical environmental challenge of the 21st century, is deepening due to increasing energy demands and emission growth linked to fossil fuel consumption. While the acceleration of industrialization, urbanization, and digitalization processes supports economic growth, it simultaneously escalates environmental pressures, thereby threatening sustainable development goals. In this process, technological progress emerges as both an environmental cost factor and a strategic tool for building sustainability. Particularly, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) possess the potential to enable resource optimization across a wide spectrum, ranging from production processes to energy management. However, the high computational power required by digitalization, alongside the energy-intensive nature of data centers and cloud computing systems, brings about debates regarding the carbon footprint of technology. While technological advancement drives up energy consumption, it also provides an innovative framework for the decarbonization of the global energy system through smart grids, precision agriculture applications, and real-time emission monitoring systems. This interaction is also discussed in the literature within the frameworks of the Environmental Kuznets Curve and Green AI approaches, indicating that technology may follow a non-linear path regarding emissions, which begins to improve after a certain investment threshold. This study aims to conceptually address the bidirectional impact of technological advancements, shaped around the axis of AI and IoT, on carbon emissions. By discussing the relationship between artificial intelligence and emissions with the most up-to-date literature from 2024 and 2026 (Wang, 2024; Melguizo, 2026), it provides new empirical evidence from an inverted U-curve perspective to counter classic pessimistic approaches in the literature, such as Strubell (2019). The derived insights are intended to serve as a strategic guide for policymakers and businesses toward optimizing digital transformation with a sustainability vision.
