Abstract

This study examines the importance of healing spaces that support the physical and mental health of elderly individuals in modern cities. By addressing design approaches aimed at improving the health and quality of life of elderly individuals, the research analyzes the healing effects of nature, daylight, silence, color, and ergonomic arrangements. The sample of the study consists of 5 volunteer participants aged between 65 and 75, residing in a private elderly care center selected in Antalya using the purposive sampling method. The data of the research were obtained through field observations conducted at the relevant center and semi-structured interviews held with the participants, and the collected qualitative data were evaluated using the Thematic Content Analysis (TCA) method. The findings obtained in the research showed that daylight, natural sounds, and green spaces have a significant positive impact on the mental well-being of elderly individuals. In addition, it was noted that colors and materials play a critical role in enhancing individuals' sense of belonging and peace toward the space. In particular, it was observed that natural materials such as wood and stone provide a sense of warmth and trust, while cold materials such as plastic and metal negatively affect this feeling. An important finding of the research is that spaces with limited social interaction opportunities increase the feeling of loneliness. In this context, it was stated that communal activity areas, conversation corners, and arrangements that strengthen social bonds positively contribute to the quality of life of individuals. On the other hand, ergonomic design deficiencies were criticized in terms of physical comfort and ease of movement. Consequently, the study scientifically reveals the healing effects of nature-based biophilic design, lighting, acoustic arrangements, and social interaction areas in spaces where elderly individuals receive healthcare services. The research emphasizes the need to design more comprehensive and individualized spaces that will support the physical and mental health of elderly individuals. In this context, spatial arrangements must meet not only the physical needs of individuals but also their emotional and social requirements.
